My wheeler is burning oil bad,(dripping out the exhaust and a lot of smoke). My question is i'm looking at a .02 over piston. can these be bored or do they have to be resleaved? also I'm tring to pin point the problem. What about the vavle guides leeking you think this wuold be a promblem with the oil issue, can the guides leak that bad and still run good? I should add that it starts fine and has power even with the bad oil leak. Thanks for the help

in my opinion it would have to be in the cylinder is were the oil is coming from. Even if the valves were messed up you wouldn't have oil in the exhause unless is sneaking past the rings on your piston even then it would have to be an exesive amount cause a littllle would just get burned up. I'm guessing you've had smaoke coming from the exhaust for a while. Anyway the best way to figure were it's coming from is to take the moter apart and inspecct it. Buy a book it's not hard if your semi mechanically enclined. My guess is cylinder or rings. If your cylinder isn't messed up then you may be able to just replace rings. If your cylinder is toasted your best bet would to buy a big bore kit. Great power for 500 buks. Anyhow you gota take it apart. Remember that even the most minute flaw in the cylinder is bad. If you don't see cross hatches I'd do something about the cylinder. Anyone else wana point out anything I might have missed?

My suggestion would be to perform a compression check. That is the best indicator of cylinder and/or piston ring condition. It's best to NOT take it apart until you know what you are going in to fix.....once the engine is apart, you can't do a compression check.

I do agree with doc. Do a compression test. It will tell you how much compression the moter has. Low compression means bad rings or cylinder. Thx doc for a easier way of checkin that. Totally slipped my simple mind. Lol

Your oil leak could be from a few issues. Bad valve guides & seals, worn piston or cylinder or a broken oil control ring. Most of these issues would still allow the motor to run alright for awhile.

As for your question about the cylinder, yes it is NiCaSil coated, and as such can't just be bored a few thousand bigger for an over bore piston.

Your choices are to have it bored out & having a sleeve installed in either stock bore or big bore, it would be a steel liner.

Or you can send the cylinder out to be re-coated.

Of you can shop around on E-bay for a low hour used top end but you run the chances that what you buy will be as bad as what you might have now.

If it were me, I would tear it down and have a look instead of guessing and worrying about it.

My vote is with bob , Very likely valve guide seals being theres oil in the exhaust , If its blow by in the rings most of the oil would burn in the combustion process ( lots of smoke ).
