how often do they get stuff in them? The one closest to the crankcase vent gets a little oil in it every once in a while, just pull the cover off and let it drain out when you notice oil in there.

I drain mine every time I go through major water.

they pull right off, drain them out and put them right back on, I wouldn't just clip them off.

I usually drain them after each cleaning, which is pretty much after each ride. Also I drain them after I clean and oil my K&N - I guess I sometimes use a little too much oil! lol
