How many people here actually participate in real races? Who here doesn't want to because of the wheel-to-wheel nature and possibility of injury?

I'm asking because I'm working on some ideas for a new racing series that would appeal to beginners, yet still be competitive and fun for everyone (including seasoned racers), and could be a stepping stone into the bigger series like GNCC.

I can't really go into detail yet... I'm trying to collect opinions from lots of people to see if there's any point in pursuing my idea. If there is, then I'll be forming an organization to back the idea. It'll be a lot of work, but it'll be a lot of fun too.

Anything people can do to increase participation is super. Keep it going Rob, the more we promote progressive ideas in this industry, the more people you'll get to come out of the woodwork and realize how fun these things are. Personally I run the local harescrambles, and am planning a few roadtrips to some organized drags. Anyone out there, don't be intimidated about trying a race, everyone had to start at one time. Go out and try something, MX, drags, harescramble, or Rob's series, people are very helpful. Lot's of fun! :D

I used to race MX bikes when I was a younger. Now at the young age of 30, I'm starting to race again after being off for about 12 years. Mostly what I'm doing is drags, cross country racing. Oh yeah, and my favorite, hill climbs. Just took 3rd place in my first hill climb in years.

Okay... now I'll throw this tidbit out... what would you think about a new type of racing that could happen as often as every weekend (provided there were people to put on the event and a place to have the event), but it was purely against the clock, not wheel to wheel? And no, I don't mean drag racing.

In a nutshell, there would be classes based on your quad's power and ability, the tires you were running, and any modifications you might have. There would be indexing formulas developed over a period of time so you could more easily compare people competing in different classes.

The whole idea is that it would be intense enough for those who have raced in other types of events, but it would be easy enough to get into that newbies would enjoy it -- such as no worries about quad damage from hitting one another, and less chance of personal injury.

Thoughts?

Would it be some type of bracket racing, you know, so people wouldn't cheat? Sounds cool to me.

well I guess I'll throw my two cents in. I race almost every weekend, I go from flat track to MX weekly and I must say the predator kick ass, I left a 88 250r with an esr 310 kit to ride this quad. the difference is amazing for a stock quad. I've collected three 2nd places and finally won one, but last week was the real shocker, I was dead last in the 1/2 mile becuase I didn't change my gearing, guys were beating me on stock 400's becuase they were running 16 teeth front sprockets and I just didn't have enough top end. That will change when companys start putting out some more aftermarket parts. I see alot of you have 13t and last cool for MX but I need to go up for the top end, it really sucked ass when I came from the back row all the way up two second off the start then got eatin alive down the straightaway, just wish I had two predators so that I could have one for flat and one for MX so that I don't have to change every thing around every couple of days.

Personally I don't think anything compares to side by side competition .... it just doesn't seem like a race unless you have another machine on the track with you, wether its drag racing, tt, or mx.
I drag race because its all that is available to me unless I travel 3hrs away, I sure wish the local atv club that sponsors the races around here would do some tt's, I'd love to go kick some A$$

My friend and i just started racing MX this year. We ahve 2 other friends that have been racing MX for quite some time. There is a local track about 10 mintues from us. The have open practice twice a week and ATV racing almost every sunday. MX racing is great and the track is fast. only a couple of BIG air jumps. great for every age.
Rob, your idea sounds a little like Rally Racing but with quads. Is that kind of what you are going for with your idea? Kind of like the Pikes Peak run? I love rally type racing. I am hooked on it. I never thought about doing it on quads. could be interesting. You might could do something like that here in western washington in Capital Forest. Its open to ATV riding.

I race District 3 mx in upstate New York with my pred. and it will run with the best of them. This has to be the nicest/easiest quad I have ever jumped or banged over the whoops and through a corner. The pred. is great on the holeshot too the thing rips off from the line like a crazed ape on steroids.
