My predator was making some horrific rear brake sounds. I stopped to take a look and found that my rear axle has a little bit of play. That, and I see new purple colored grease by the axle. The only thing I can think of is that my bearings are shot. I only have about 20 hrs on it so I think it was my fault. I changed to a 39 tooth sprocket and I think I may have over tighten the concentric locking bolts. I have the predator manual and in the chain tension section it says to torque to 45lbs. In the brake section of the book it says to torque the same bolts to 30lbs! Which is right? Am I right in assuming that my bearings are shot if I have play in my axle? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Actually Wes, there's a sticker on the LH side of the swingarm that says 35 Ft/lbs....sure seems like there was some confusion during the writting process. We were whining for the machine, so that probably didn't help. Check with your dealer, are you still within your 6 month warranty? Sorry if you stated that.

Yea if you break the paint and see rust, most times. You'll have over torque them. 35 FT/lbs... is'nt much. I think 18 FT/LBS is a HARD finger tight.

Thanks

I think I know. But I should've ask is't side to side slop, or moveing the axle in all directions slop.

Wes.....not nessisarilly that they are shot.........I had the same thing happen to mine and my bearings were totally fine........I need to ask you..Do you ride in ANY sand??????In the manual, its a bit confusing, and are DEf. off on the Torque specs. The 45 is WAY to tight, causing pinch bolts to overtighten, I reccomend trying it at 30 instead, this helped us alot, I started this topic awhile back cause I had the same problem. Its causing bolts to bind, twist .we had two in one week do this I approached this with my dealer, and there specs were different as well, and they recommenede 30 also and said its got to be a clerical error. As far as your axle being loose,it could be the big nut on the axle on the outtside of the brake, that is why ours was loose. We have prol 60 hours on our Predator, and when this started happening, our bearings and axle were fine.?If its side to side, I can almost guarentee you .... this is your problem, if it is moving from side to side, you should DEF pull it apart, because ours got packed full of sand because of this, nothing got damaged or anything, but this was why we had horrible grinding sounds. You need to clean it out really good, and repack your grease heavily .I hope this helps, if you need any more help, let me know............TINA

I forgot to mention, does your chain go out of adj easily??? If so, up the compression in the rear shock and this will eliminate you having to tweek on the bolts Cause if your bottoming out much it will loosen it.........
