'04 Predator 500 TDC/timing issue

As you can see in the attached photos Fig. 1 - Fig. 3 the timing marks on the cams are in the correct 9 & 12 o'clock positions, the lower sprocket timing mark is aligned with the marking on the inside of the casing and the 3 gold links on the timing chain are aligned with the timing marks as per the service manual. However, if you look at Fig. 4 you can see the TDC indicator mark is in the 5 o'clock position, not the 12 o'clock position. In the condition I have outlined above the piston appears to be at true TDC, though the "T" on the flywheel would suggest otherwise. How this could have ended up in this position (which appears to be out of sequence)?

Any insight would be appreciated.
