4wd system

I have a perplexing problem...when I engage my 4wd system the front axles turn but the wheels do not, but when I put in reverse and push the over ride button the wheels turn. What could be the prolem and how do I fix it? I have a 1995 300 xplorer 4x4

I don't know anything about these machines yet, and too Just joined this site, But to me it sounds like an outer hub problem...>IMO
