Default Stripped Oil Drain plug on KTM

What are you guys doing on the stripped drain plugs? Mine is getting bad. I ran a thread fixing tap through it and it is not tightening up. It is a 12x1.50. Is there and oversize plug for it?

This quad has been nothing but problems since buying it. I knew the plug was messed up when I first did the oil change and have been dreading changing it lately. Hope I do not loose the plug at the race tomorrow.

Which quad? The 525 IRS or the 450S reborn into a 525S? I have only gone through 2 oil changes so far... Scared of what is to come..

Don't be scared, its not a problem unless you treat it like a jackass. Someone must have screwed up the threads before jeff got it.

Mine was just cross threaded, and my machine shop retapped the threads. But, that on my 07, I no longer have.

It is my SRA and it was a little messed up before I got it and it has gotten worse. My IRS is fine last time I did a change. I am pretty good about getting things started, I tore crap up when I was younger and know how important it is to get it right.

I have used jb weld many times on bikes, it always held up no matter what i used it for. To me its the best stuff around short of welding.

Could you rig something up in a way to put a stop screw up against it? I was looking at mine, but came up with nothing to help . only as a temp fix.

if its a 12x1.5 why can't you buy a 13x1.5 tap ? should run in the same tread just cut it out a little more. Maybe I'm sure you can buy M13 sump plugs by the boat load.

Jeff, if you are going to go with an insert, do not go with a helicoil. Go get a TIME SERT. see them at timesert.com.....much better IMO. If you are just going oversize, maybe you could go with a quick change plug from an auto store, I am not sure how small they make them though.
