Default Ranger throttle position sensor adjustment

My '09 Ranger HD has been setting the 22 tps trouble code for a while. I have a master disconnect on the machine and it always erased the code but during the day it would always come back. I read the service manual about adjusting the tps but it is very involved requiring a harness that is powered by its own battery and the special d screwdriver to close the throttle plate, etc etc. A new tps is $147. I am a Diesel mechanic and I thought "well if someones going to mess with it at the dealer I might as well play with it for a while."
It has had a minor dead spot in the throttle from day one. In a real tight spot it made minor movements ugly. My first attempts at adjusting were with the motor dead and one way I had no improvement and the other caused low idle and missing. I had it marked and set it back where it was and it ran as always. Then I adjusted it with it idling. After 1 or 2 tries it no longer had the hesitation. Only moved it about .010 . Then came many test runs to see if I could get the trouble code to come on. It did not and the machine ran and engages the belt smoother than ever. Who knows if the dealer would have adjusted it or just swapped it for a new one or even knew how to adjust it with the correct tools.
