Polaris Glacier Plows

As many know I work at a John Deere/Polaris Dealership, and well over the last two weeks Plows have been sold on at least half of the ATVs, Mostly X2s, but that is beside the point that I have not made yet. This is a bit abnormal for this area. Usually we sell plows the week/day of a predicted(usually wrong) snow storm and all of them have been the Old Glacier 1 plow system. Notice I said Old and 1. Well I thought I would write up on the differences of the types Polaris offers. Polaris has released the Glacier 2 system. Lighter(99# vs. 135#), faster hook up time (5sec vs. 10sec), greater blade lift height(13+ vs 20+) and a shorter frame length(22" vs. 40"). The Glacier 2 system is only for 2005-2007 models and the Glacier 1 available for all Polaris models as far back as Gen 4, ATP, and 6x6. Now in the past Polaris also made a mount plate available for other manufactures ATV, but not any more. Just Polaris ATVs can take on the Glacier. I personally thought it was a great Idea to make Mount plates for the other brands but I understand the "Exclusiveness/Unique" prospective of the Glacier Plow systems.

The Glacier 1 mount plate can be used for a front mounted snow blower(unknown Manufacture, most likely Agri-Fab) and front mounted mower from Agri-fab. So That is three pieces of equipment that can be used on one ATV making this the most versatile system on the market.

While the difference in List price in $50 both use the same lift method and plow blades just diff frame and mount. Until I hear feed back the Glacier 2 frame and mount, I would recommend the Glacier 1 if you are plowing anything such as dirt, sand and gravel. I know packed snow can put a lot of stress on the same frame and mount but I would think the heavier frame would hold up better.

X2 owners will need to get an additional adapter mount for the G1 system(really inexpensive, most dealers will most likely not sweat this $20 item). No additional pieces are needed for the G2 system. The MV can only take the G1 system.

The Ranger will have a G1 system, released for 2006, but it has only become available over the last 2 months.

My only concern with the Plow system, and maybe it is nothing, is the Prospector tracks. Will the new G2 system with an ATV with tracks effect one another? I see nothing of an adaptor kit for the use of tracks.

I have the Glacier 1 system and I LOVE it. Having been doing some wrenching at the local Poo dealership, I got to assemble the Glacier 2 system the other day.

While I agree that G2 is easier to mount, and I do like the higher lift height, you couldn't give me one. THe G1 is MUCH beefier, to the tune of steel that is nearly TWICE as thick on the mount. Not to mention the mount is far easier to install and remove from the ATV, for those of us who want to do so to avoid banging it up on rocks. Add to that the G2 mount sticks out and down more, making it even more susceptible.

I spent two winters plowing with my G1 and I have NO issues with it at all. I rather like having it stick out in front farther, because I can see the blade better, and what it's doing.

On top of that, I have mount plates for both my Grizzly 660 and my Sportsman 800, and I prefer to use the Grizzly for plowing, because it's easier to shift from Low to Reverse and back again, and because it's Maxxis Bighorn tires are far superior in snow to the PXTs on my SP800.

Bottom line is this... the Glacier plow system KICKS ASS, and even though I personally don't care for the G2, it's still a darn nice system and would serve most people well.

Highly recoommended.

i put the glacier II plow system on my x2 and have tryed it on dirt and snow and it worked better then my old glacier I system I thought, yes it is closer to the quad to solve this I built marker polls for the blade, made a huge different, I put this system on to test it before we tryed to sell to customers, cause we don't want any problems later right.and so far it's worked great.

I really put the system throught the tests this weekend, we got some really heavy wet snow on sunday the glacierII system worked great.

The Blade you use is the same blades that were used on the glacier I system. The plow frame and mount are the only differents.

I just ordered mine today...so I'm assuming I’m getting the G2 system…correct? The dealer said that it will do snow and dirt with the 48” blade. I wanted to get the 60” but he recommended that the add weight of the plow and the wet snow might be tough on the machine. I heard from past posts that it’s fairly easy to install. Also ordered the hand and thumb warmers at the same time. Does anyone know if I will have a hard time taking the grips on and off?? Thanks

He said the same thing about the 52" plow as well. We get more 'wet snow' in the northeast than anything else. Also it doesn’t help that my driveway has a pretty steep incline on it. With all that combined, do you think I should just stick with the 48” or upgrade to the 52”? I didn’t pick up the plow yet, so there’s still time to switch if it’s worth it. Thanks

sbarriere. Go check your email...

Also anyone know just for grins of the polaris glacier has a manual lift? And if a polaris with a Glacier system having a Warn 3.0 and a polaris front bumper if the winch line would rub on the push tube bumper?

I'm not sure on the manual lift, but I have the Polaris brush guard on my SP800 and the line clears it just fine. Given the angle that the line goes down to the plow frame, I think you'll have no trouble with the Polaris front bumper.

Right on!

I put the 52" blade on my 500 and have pushed dirt and snow with it and it worked fine, to take your hand grips off use an air compressor plug the hole at one end and blow air in the other end and then do the other side , then just do it in reverse to put them back on, this way you don't have to glue the grips. Its easyer with a extra set of hands to plug one side for you.

if you want a good deal on a complete Glacier 2 setup, which includes blade, mount and atv mount, go to breeselawngarden on ebay....all of their setups have a 'make offer', there prices are good to start with, but you can get them down lower with the 'make offer'...

to give you and idea, I got the 52" setup, from Polaris the prices are:

52" Plow Blade = $144.99
Glacier 2 Frame = $239.99
Glacier 2 Mount = $79.99

Total from Polaris (less shipping) = $464.97

On ebay at Breese, that whole setup is $379.99 + $40 shipping
Total = $419.99

BUT...I made them a couple of offers, the too $350 for the whole setup,

so the total is $390 shipped

I got the G2 with my 800 and put the 60 inch blade on it. Prolly wont every push serious dirt with it, but will push snow. I will let you guys know how it works as soon as we get some snow.

the only blade that is setup to push dirt and rocks according to polaris is the 48" blade, but I can't see why you couldn't push it with any of them if you do it in moderation...

One thing that gets me is that Polaris makes the 52" blade, since I bought mine from Breese on ebay as I replied above, and they weren't offering 48" setups, I wanted to get a blade liner, which I had on my G1 setup and works great, but they don't make a liner for the 52", so I ordered a 60" liner and will cut and fit it...oh well...
